Hmm,
Wouldn't it be useful to also make the register link visible again ( next to login in the top-right corner ) and then put this information on the register page instead of the current "Creating a new account is currently not possible" message? As soon as this topic won't be the most recent topic in "General Discussion" it won't be particularly visible for new users .. even with it being a sticky post.

Yes that would be good but I don't want to customize the phpbb install to achieve this (and messing with php/html always cause me grief
). In general, users who want to register have found a way to do so. And it is not like there are 100s of users waiting to register either.
